A taste of what the SeaCURE project has done so far

Regulatory framework

We have worked with Defra and environmental bodies to understand the suitability of UK regulations to manage ocean carbon removal. We developed models to assess the dilution of low carbon water, and based on this, worked with the Environment Agency to obtain a permit for the work at SEA LIFE.

Technology

We designed and built the plant, then demonstrated that the technology works over a two month trial.

Cost and Scale

We examined how much energy it would take, what it might cost, and the broader challenges of doing this at a scale big enough to make a real difference for the climate.

Removal from the atmosphere

We undertook fieldwork and developed models to assess how the carbon removal from the atmosphere can be verified.

Potential impacts

We ran laboratory experiments to begin to understand how marine organisms may respond.

Starting the conversation

We've been stimulating public and policy conversations about marine carbon removal in the UK, though school talks, the press and meetings with MPs.
